The Man in the Black Hat

I perform for the man in the black hat and coat watching from the booth in the back of the theater

I sing an existential song after clearing my throat — off key — my stage fright masked by my fear

It sows a fit from the spectators who rise from their seats to their feet to cheer — some even shed a tear

But the man tilts his cap over his eyes and swaddles his coat in the booth in the back of the theater

Description

A poem that came from a dream about the state of my career.
